Being Steadfast

How Can I Stay Steadfast In Christ?

October 08, 20256 min read

Being steadfast isn’t about perfection—it’s about daily surrender and staying connected to the One who gives us strength.

Each day, I journal, choosing a word for the day and then finding a verse that correlates with it so that I can reflect on that verse throughout the day. I have had some experiences lately that have really impacted me in a way that I wanted to share with you, along with my thoughts. I pray that you will be blessed as I was in processing through these experiences myself.

I don’t know about you, but at times, the temptations of this world can be so overwhelming for me. One morning, as I was processing through this thought and again asking God to forgive me, my word for that day became “steadfast.” As I go through my day, I want to be more steadfast in my commitment and my surrender to God so that I can be a living testimony for Him. I want to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be rooted in His love.

The devil is ever watching us to see where he can trip us up. He wants to destroy us. He doesn’t have any good plans for us. He wants to make us think that he is giving us freedom. But it is bondage. I know that, and I feel in bondage when I choose things that are not in line with God. So why do I do it? I have said to myself, “What is your problem?” But even those words are not from God, but from the evil one that wants to entrap me.

As I felt the entrapment of the devil and his ways and the discouragement that he wanted to bring, God brought me the word “steadfast.” And this is the verse that I claimed that day:

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
—2 Peter 3:17-18 (KJV)

This verse helped me to realize that I need to be more steadfast. The Lord can and will show me the tricks of the devil, and I can defeat him, but only as I keep myself connected with God. I need to stay connected—daily, hourly, moment by moment. I can’t allow other things to distract me from my connection with Him. This is the most important connection that we can have.

As Jesus said in:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
—Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Seeking God first is the most essential duty. Nothing else matters as much as seeking Him. The only way we can be a living testimony of God’s grace is by being filled with His Spirit and being rooted in His love.

A couple of days later, in my journal, my word for the day was “energy.” It made me realize there is only one way that I can move forward with energy and steadfastness, and that is by doing what Paul talked about in Galatians 2:20:

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
—Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

When I die to self daily and allow Christ to live within me through His Holy Spirit, I will have His steadfastness and the energy I need for each day. I can be heir of God’s promise of salvation as I worship Him in Spirit and in truth. And I will reflect Him to others and be able to intercede on behalf of those around me.

Why is it so hard to die daily and to be steadfast? I think it is because we don’t stay connected. We can’t do any of this on our own. God wants so desperately to do this in us. We often don’t want to surrender and let Him do the work. The work is painful.

It is like the pure gold tried in the fire. We must endure the heat of trials for God to refine us like gold. At times, I think I am refined enough. “Give me a break, Lord.” But God knows me better than I know myself. I want to trust Him with my life, no matter what it takes. Does this mean I’ll never complain again? No, I am human, and every time I let self arise, I am going to start to complain about what I am going through. But I want to commit to keep so connected with God that I can say, “Not my will but thine be done” instead of complaining. I want to remain crucified to self and steadfast in God.

Prayer of Commitment

Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before You acknowledging my weakness and my need for Your strength.
Help me to remain steadfast, rooted in Your love, and filled with Your Spirit. Teach me to die daily to self and allow Christ to live in me. When the enemy tries to discourage or entrap me, remind me of Your promises and keep me connected to You moment by moment. May my life reflect Your glory and bring others closer to You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Action Steps

  1. Journal Daily – Choose a word for the day and find a verse that aligns with it. Let that verse guide your thoughts and choices.

  2. Stay Connected – Take intentional pauses throughout the day to pray or reflect on God’s Word.

  3. Die Daily to Self – Each morning, commit Galatians 2:20 to memory and surrender your will to God’s will.

  4. Trust the Refining Process – When trials come, remind yourself that God is refining you like gold, not abandoning you.

  5. Encourage Others – Share your steadfast journey with someone else who may be struggling with discouragement or temptation.

Closing Thought

Being steadfast is not about perfection but about daily surrender. The enemy wants to entrap us, but God calls us to be rooted in His love, filled with His Spirit, and steadfast in our walk with Him. When we stay connected, we will have the strength and energy we need—not in our own power, but in Christ living within us.
