Resting in God

Resting In God and Hearing His Spirit

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.”– Corrie ten Boom

As the sun sets and the day winds down, our minds often race with unfinished to-do lists, worries about tomorrow, or regrets from today. But what if our nighttime routine could be transformed into a sacred space where we release, refocus, and rest fully in God's provision and protection?

B = Bedtime for Rest

🌙 How Can My Nighttime Routine Better Reflect Trust in God’s Provision and Protection?

There’s a verse that has become precious to me—one I often whisper before drifting off to sleep:

📖 Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

"I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety."

When I include the “trust God factor,” I can truly rest—and not just physically. My heart can be still. The burdens that seemed so heavy moments before begin to fade in the presence of His peace. That’s the kind of rest I want more of in my life. I don’t want to carry fear into the night. I want to lay it down and trust that God is holding me—and everything that concerns me.

One of the ways I’ve experienced this kind of peace is by setting my thoughts on God's promises.

📖 Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

There are many nights when I reflect on a scripture as I lay down to sleep. Sometimes I begin to pray for others, and before I know it, I’m fast asleep. Isn’t that beautiful? When we take our minds off ourselves and place them on God and His goodness, peace often follows.

It’s as though the Spirit of God gently cradles us into rest. Not because our problems are gone—but because we remember that God is with us in them.

B = Be Open to the Holy Spirit

🤔 How Can I Learn to Recognize the Holy Spirit's Voice Over My Own?

This is a question I wrestle with at times. Maybe you do too.

📖 John 10:27 (KJV)

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

The closer I get to God, the more I recognize His leading. It’s not always dramatic or loud. Sometimes, it’s just a quiet nudge, a whisper, a scripture that won’t leave my heart. And often, what He is asking me to do crosses my selfish desires. That’s one of the ways I’ve learned to discern His voice—when it leads me out of my comfort zone and into surrender.

📖 Isaiah 30:21 (KJV)

"And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying,
This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left."

I love this promise. I have claimed it more than once in my life. I want to live in that peaceful place where I trust that God is directing my steps. Even when I don’t have it all figured out, I can move forward knowing He’ll guide me.

🌿 Abiding Brings Confidence

📖 1 John 2:27-28 (KJV)

"But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you,
and ye need not that any man teach you:
but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming."

What a promise! As I abide in Him, I can have confidence. That’s what I long for—not just a moment of peace, but a lifestyle of peace. I want to be so connected to the vine—Jesus—that everything I do flows from Him.

I want to be fully committed to God. How about you?

🙏 A Prayer of Commitment

“Dear Heavenly Father,
I come to You with a longing to trust You more. I confess that I often carry my burdens alone and try to figure things out in my own strength.
Teach me to lay down in peace, knowing You are my safety and my source. Help me to keep my mind stayed on You and Your promises—especially when fear or anxiety rise up.
Lord, help me to recognize Your voice above all others—even above my own.
Give me the strength to follow Your leading, even when it requires sacrifice.
I want to abide in You and live in the confidence that comes from walking closely with You.
Lord, take my evening routine and make it sacred.
Let it be a place of peace, reflection, and surrender.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.”

Action Steps: Bringing Peace into Your Nighttime Routine

  1. Scripture Before Sleep – Keep a verse like Psalm 4:8 or Isaiah 26:3 on your nightstand. Read it out loud before bed.

  2. Surrender Journal – Write down one thing you're giving to God each night.

  3. Pray for Others – Shift your focus outward by interceding for others as you fall asleep.

  4. Ask and Listen – Say, “Lord, what are You saying to me today?” Then listen quietly.

  5. Set a Peaceful Environment – While preparing for bed keep the lights low, use herbs or essential oils like Lavender, and create a calming space that reflects the peace you seek.
