Keep Marching, God Fights for You
My job is to keep marching in faith—God’s job is to bring the victory.
God Fights for Us
Recently, I have been going through some studies on the book of Exodus and the Children of Israel. There are so many thoughts that come to me when thinking on this subject. I believe that many of the things I reflect on apply to our lives today. There is so much power in what God did for the Children of Israel—and His power hasn’t changed.
It was not God’s intention for the Children of Israel to fight their way into the territory of the Promised Land. God was going to do the fighting, and they were to “hold their peace” (Exodus 14:14). He was the One who brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage (Exodus 20:2). He did the work.
God is the One who fights for us. He wants to bring us out of bondage. We have to believe that He will deliver us from our bondage of sin. He is going to fight for us against the devil. We can’t win against the devil, but God can. Just as the Children of Israel could not win against Pharaoh, we cannot win against the enemy on our own.
I am reminded of when the Children of Israel came to the Jordan. They couldn’t cross the river. They had no power to do so. But God had the power. It required them to believe God when He said to go forward. It must have sounded crazy to them, to say the least. Yet they believed, stepped forward, and the waters parted (Joshua 3:17). That kind of trust and faith in God moves mountains—or in their case, rivers.
When God asks us to do something, no matter how crazy it may sound, as long as it does not go against His Word, we should walk forward. When our trials seem overwhelming and we feel like if we step forward we will drown, we have got to trust, step out in faith, and the power of God will come.
I am also reminded about the battle of Jericho. If you had been there and were asked to march around the city every day, would you have done it? How absurd does that sound! Yet they showed their belief and trust by doing exactly what God asked—and He provided the power to defeat Jericho. “So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets… and the wall fell down flat” (Joshua 6:20). And what did they do? Nothing but march.
What is in your life right now that seems like you are going up against a city? The walls look so tall. There is no way you could possibly climb over them or break them down. What should you do? Keep marching with Jesus! His power will win the battle for you. It may not be the way you think it should happen, but it will be the way that is best for you and for those around you. The question is, are you willing to trust God with the outcome?
God wanted to drive out and conquer the land for Israel, but He also wanted to do it in His time, not theirs. Do we often want our trials and hardships to go away quickly? Sometimes we think, I’m obeying God—why isn’t life smooth for me? But life isn’t always smooth. Still, I want to learn to just keep “marching” forward, walking with Christ, and believing that His power will sustain me and win the battles before me.
When I try to force my way, to do the right thing in my own strength, I fall every time. But when I focus on walking with Jesus each day, filling my life with His Word and promises, and spending time in prayer, His power sustains me through all the difficulties.
Am I saying I do this well? No, I struggle just as each of you do. Somehow, I feel as though it can’t happen unless I make it happen. But that is exhausting and discouraging. I often fail in leaving the work for God. And at the end of the day, I say, Lord, forgive me again. Yet, the days I finally surrender and leave the work to Him—what a blessing! I want to experience more of those blessings in my life. How about you?
It doesn’t mean all the trials and struggles will go away. But I can be joyful, knowing that “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28), and that Jesus will accomplish the work He has begun in me (Philippians 1:6). I want to commit to leaving that work in His hands. How about you?
Prayer of Commitment
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the One who fights my battles. Forgive me for the times I have tried to fight in my own strength and failed. I surrender my struggles, fears, and walls into Your hands. Help me to keep marching forward with faith, even when it seems impossible. Teach me to rest in Your promises, to trust Your timing, and to believe that You will finish the work You have begun in me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Action Steps
Reflect on God’s past victories – Write down times in your life when God came through for you, just as He did for Israel.
Memorize key Scriptures – Exodus 14:14, Joshua 6:20, and Romans 8:28 are powerful reminders when fear sets in.
Practice daily surrender – Each morning, pray: “Lord, I leave today’s battles in Your hands. Help me to march in faith.”
Take a step of faith – Whatever wall you are facing, ask God what your “march” looks like today, and obey Him.
Closing Statement
The same God who brought Israel out of Egypt, parted the Jordan, and broke down the walls of Jericho is the same God who is fighting for you today. He hasn’t changed. Your job is to march in faith—His job is to bring the victory. Trust Him with the outcome, and you will see His power in your life.
