How to Live a Balanced Life God's Way
“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.” — Corrie ten Boom
There are times in life when everything feels too heavy—our minds won’t shut off, our bodies are exhausted, and our spirits feel distant from God. We pray, serve, work, and give, but we forget one very important thing: to rest. And not just physical rest, but the kind of rest that nourishes our whole being—body, mind, and spirit.
As I reflect on how to live a B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. life, two B’s come to mind:
B = Bedtime for Rest
B = Be Open to the Holy Spirit
Both are vital to living with vitality, joy, and purpose.
🌙 B = Bedtime for Rest
❓How does my sleep (or lack of it) affect my spiritual, emotional, and physical health?
One of the most powerful stories in the Bible about rest is found in the life of Elijah. He had just witnessed one of God’s greatest miracles—fire from heaven and rain after drought. And yet, after a threat from Queen Jezebel, he ran for his life. He was spiritually shaken, emotionally overwhelmed, and physically exhausted. What did God do?
Let’s read it together.
📖 1 Kings 19:5–8 (KJV):
"And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God."
My reflection:
This story fascinates me. Elijah wasn’t rebuked for feeling broken. Instead, God gently gave him what he needed most—rest and nourishment. Elijah was not ready to continue his journey until he was restored physically. God knew the emotional, physical, and spiritual toll Elijah’s mission had taken, and He responded with compassion.
📖 3 John 1:2 (KJV):
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
This tells me that God’s desire is for me to be whole—rested, well, and spiritually nourished. Our bedtime is not a luxury or laziness. It is a spiritual act of trust, an acknowledgment that God is still working while we sleep.
🕊️ B = Be Open to the Holy Spirit
❓How can I cultivate a daily relationship with the Holy Spirit?
There’s a closeness that God longs to have with us through His Spirit. But this relationship must be nurtured daily—through prayer, listening, obedience, and surrender.
📖 2 Corinthians 13:14 (KJV):
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.”
My reflection:
I love this verse because it reminds me that I can invite the Holy Spirit into my day. I can pray for the power, wisdom, and companionship of the Spirit. This is a prayer I want to make a habit. When I ask for the Spirit’s presence, I’m reminded I’m not walking alone.
📖 Galatians 5:25 (KJV):
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
My reflection:
This is where the rubber meets the road. If I’m asking the Holy Spirit to guide me, then I must actually listen and walk in step with Him. I don’t always get it right. There are days I let distractions or emotions take over. But God is so faithful. Each time I recognize my missteps, I can realign with Him and begin again. What a gracious Father we have!
🙏 Prayer of Commitment
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of rest and for the Holy Spirit who guides and comforts me. Help me to honor rest as a part of my spiritual life. Teach me to trust You enough to lay down my burdens at night and awaken refreshed to serve You.
Lord, fill me daily with Your Holy Spirit. Help me to walk in step with You, to listen, obey, and realign quickly when I stray. I want to live balanced—in body, mind, and spirit. Thank You for grace that meets me each morning.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.”
✅ Action Steps for a B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Life
Establish a bedtime routine – Turn off screens, pray, and surrender your burdens to God before sleep.
Rest guilt-free – Remember Elijah. God provided rest before ministry. So must you.
Invite the Holy Spirit daily – Begin your morning with a simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, lead me today.”
Practice spiritual listening – Throughout the day, pause to ask, “What are You saying, Lord?”
Grace for missteps – When you realize you’ve wandered, stop and reconnect. God is always near.
💬 Closing Encouragement
God cares about every part of you—your tired body, your weary heart, and your spiritual walk. He doesn’t just want your service; He wants your rest and relationship. Don’t wait until burnout to find balance. Start today. Ask for rest. Invite the Spirit. You’re not in this alone.
