Finding Your Rhythm: B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living
To be truly B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D., we must feed our bodies with what God grew and our spirits with what God spoke.
In the relentless hustle and bustle of everyday life, achieving a B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. life often feels like an uphill battle. When our schedules overflow, it can feel almost selfish to prioritize self-care. We tell ourselves that our jobs, our families, or our endless "to-do" lists are more important than our own well-being.
However, let’s clear up that misconception right now: Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it is necessary.
Today, we are continuing our series on B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living by diving into part 3 of the letter N. This letter holds a dual significance that bridges the gap between our physical health and our spiritual vitality:
N = Nutrition for Wellness (The Physical)
N = Nourish Yourself with God’s Word (The Spiritual)
I truly believe these two concepts are inseparable. It is difficult to feel spiritually vibrant when our bodies are sluggish from poor physical nourishment. Conversely, when we aren't spiritually fed, we often attempt to fill that void with "junk"—both literally and figuratively.
Physical Nutrition: Fueling the Temple
Our journey begins with a practical question: How can I better prepare meals that nourish rather than harm? The answer lies in intentionality and returning to the Creator’s original design.
1. The Power of Planning
"She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens." — Proverbs 31:14-15
These verses highlight the importance of preparation. The virtuous woman doesn't leave her family's nutrition to chance; she plans. When we plan our meals, we can ensure we choose nutrient-dense foods to strengthen our bodies. Planning is our best defense against "grab-and-go" junk food. When we are hungry and have no plan, we almost always default to convenient but nutrient-poor choices.
2. The Original Design
"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to it shall be for meat." — Genesis 1:29
This verse offers a sneak peek into God’s original blueprint for our health: a plant-based diet. God filled plants with nutrient-dense substances designed to make us thrive. The more we move away from refined, processed "non-foods" and return to whole foods prepared from scratch, the better our bodies can utilize that energy.
Spiritual Nutrition: Feeding the Soul
As we transition to the spiritual side, the parallels are striking. When our bodies are healthy, our minds are clearer, making it easier to hear the voice of the Lord. Just as our bodies need nutrient-dense food, our souls need the most nutrient-dense spiritual "food" available: The Holy Bible.
The question we must ask is: How does God's Word provide spiritual nourishment?
1. A Living, Powerful Force
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." — Hebrews 4:12
God’s Word is not a static text; it is alive. In my toughest moments, I have found it to be a source of incredible power. God leads us to exactly what we need, precisely when we need it. I am constantly amazed at how a specific verse finds me at the "correct" time—and sometimes He provides nourishment even before the trial begins.
2. Complete Equipment for Life
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." — 2 Timothy 3:16-17
We can trust the Word because it is inspired by God. It nourishes us by providing exactly what the moment requires—whether that is encouragement or "reproof." There have been times when I felt deep conviction while reading, and the Holy Spirit used that Word to heal me and make me whole again. Because the Word is living, you can read the same passage multiple times and be blessed in a new, different way each time.
3. Digesting the Truth
"Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts." — Jeremiah 15:16
To get the most out of our physical food, we must chew it well. Spiritual nourishment works the same way. We shouldn't rush through our reading just to check a box. We need to "eat" the Word—meditating on it, examining it thoroughly, and asking, "How can I apply this to my life today?"
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the gift of life and the body You have entrusted to me. I confess that I have not always treated this temple with the care it deserves, often choosing convenience over nourishment. Today, I commit to seeking balance. Help me to fuel my body with the good things You created and to fuel my soul daily with Your living Word. Grant me the discipline to plan and the hunger to seek You above all else.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
5 Action Steps for B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living
Weekly Meal Mapping: Set aside 30 minutes each Sunday to plan your meals. By deciding what you will eat before you are hungry, you remove the temptation to opt for processed "junk" when life gets busy.
Choose "Whole" Over "Refined": For every meal, try to include at least one food in its original form (an apple instead of juice, or brown rice instead of white flour). Aim to get as close as possible to the Genesis 1:29 plan.
The "First Fruits" Reading: Before you check your phone or the news, "eat" a portion of Scripture. Let God’s Word be the first thing that nourishes your mind in the morning.
Meditative Chewing: When you read the Bible, don’t aim for speed. Pick one verse and "chew" on it all day. Think about its meaning while you work or commute, asking God how to apply it.
Listen to Your Body and Spirit: Pay attention to the connection between the two. Notice how much easier it is to pray and focus when you have fueled yourself with real food and consistent Scripture.
True wellness is a holistic journey. We cannot neglect the physical and expect the spiritual to flourish, nor can we ignore the spiritual and expect to feel truly whole. By intentionally choosing Nutrition for our bodies and Nourishment for our souls, we step out of the chaos and into the beautiful balance God intended for us.
