You cannot run a strong Christian walk on physical junk or spiritual starvation

Welcome back to our B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living series! If you’ve been following along, you know we are exploring what it means to live a life that honors God in every aspect—mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Today, we are continuing with the letter N. It is a profound truth that our physical habits often mirror our spiritual condition. Because we are whole beings created by God, how we treat our bodies is deeply connected to how we nurture our spirits. Today in part 5, we are looking at the two sides of the same coin: Nutrition for Wellness on the physical side, and Nourishing Yourself with God’s Word on the spiritual side.

The Physical Side: Nutrition for Wellness

Let’s begin by looking at our physical bodies. The fundamental question we need to ask ourselves today is: How does my relationship with food reflect my trust in God’s provision?

Too often, we separate our diets from our discipleship. But the Bible reminds us that even our daily sustenance is a matter of faith. Consider the prayer Jesus taught His disciples:

"Give us this day our daily bread." (Matthew 6:11, KJV)

As I stay closely connected with God, I learn to trust that He will supply my needs.

Be honest with yourself: how often have you said, "I just don't have the money to eat healthy foods"? I know I have. Wholesome, fresh, organic ingredients can be expensive, and it is easy to default to cheaper, processed alternatives out of fear. But I have found that when I step out in faith and prioritize buying the foods I know God would consider healthy for my body, He provides the means. It requires a step of faith, but He is always faithful to provide our daily bread.

God cares about what we put into our bodies because they are the temples of the Holy Ghost. When we choose nutrition that honors Him, we are trusting His provision. As Moses reminded the Israelites in the wilderness:

"And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live." (Deuteronomy 8:3, KJV)

God is the ultimate Provider. He supplies the physical food that keeps our hearts beating, but even in the midst of physical abundance, He reminds us that there is a deeper hunger within us that physical food can never satisfy.

The Spiritual Side: Nourish Yourself with God's Word

This brings us beautifully to the spiritual side of N: Nourish Yourself with God’s Word. The question we must ponder here is: How can Scripture strengthen my faith in hard times?

Just as physical malnutrition leaves our bodies weak and vulnerable to disease, spiritual malnutrition leaves our faith fragile and easily shaken by life's storms. To build a resilient faith, we must feast on Scripture.

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17, KJV)

This verse underscores just how vital it is to be consistently immersed in the Word. When we open our Bibles, we aren't just reading ink on a page; we are tuning our ears to hear His still, small voice. It is in those quiet moments with Scripture that God gives us the specific promises that carry us through our darkest, most difficult trials.

When the world around us feels chaotic, God's Word provides the practical direction we desperately need.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105, KJV)

In my own life, I have found God’s Word to be an incredible blessing—acting like a beacon of light in moments of confusion. It shows me exactly where to step next so I don't lose my footing.

We live in a culture where truth feels subjective and everything is constantly changing. People break promises, institutions fail, and the future can look uncertain. But look at this beautiful promise:

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." (Isaiah 40:8, KJV)

I love this truth! In the days we live in, there isn't much in this world we can truly depend on. But God's Word is always there, unchanging and entirely trustworthy. We can boldly claim its promises, resting in the absolute certainty that every single word will be fulfilled in due season.

So, how do we tie these two concepts together?

Think of it this way: What food is to the physical body, Scripture is to the spiritual soul. Both require intentionality, consistency, and a desire for what is clean and pure. If we feed our bodies junk food, we become sluggish and sick. If we feed our minds the "junk food" of worldly media, worry, and secular philosophies while starving our spirits of Scripture, our faith will wither.

True B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living means recognizing that God desires wellness for your whole being—spirit, soul, and body. When you cultivate discipline in your physical kitchen, let it inspire discipline in your spiritual war room. Eat to honor Him, and read to know Him.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come to You today recognizing that my body and my spirit belong to You. Forgive me for the times I have neglected my physical health or starved my spiritual life. Lord, I want to live a B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. life that honors You.

I choose today to trust You for my daily bread. Give me the faith to make healthy choices for my body, believing that You will provide the means. More than that, Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word. Let Scripture be a lamp to my feet and the anchor for my soul during difficult times. Teach me to hear Your still, small voice and to rest in Your unchanging promises.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

5 Action Steps for Holistic Nourishment

To put these truths into practice this week, here are five practical steps you can take to nourish both your body and your spirit:

  1. Start Your Day with Spiritual First-Fruits
Before you feed your body breakfast, feed your soul with Scripture. Spend the first 15 minutes of your morning in the Word, ensuring you are spiritually fueled before you meet the demands of the day.

  2. Meal Plan with Prayerful Stewardship
Sit down and plan your meals for the week with a focus on whole, life-giving foods. If finances feel tight, bring that budget to God in prayer. Step out in faith, trusting Him to multiply your resources as you seek to honor Him with your health.

  3. Replace "Junk" with Truth
Identify one area of "mental junk food" (too much social media, negative news, or mindless TV) and swap that time for audio Bible listening, worship music, or reading a Christian book that builds your faith.

  4. Practice Scripture Snacking
Keep God's Word accessible throughout the day. Write down a verse—like Isaiah 40:8 or Psalm 119:105—on an index card or your phone's lock screen. Look at it during your lunch break or between tasks to keep your mind centered on truth.

  5. Dine with Gratitude
Turn your meal times into moments of worship. Slow down, pray over your food, and truly meditate on God’s goodness and provision. Treat your nutrition as an act of gratitude toward the Creator who sustained you.

True wellness is never just about the scale or the gym; it is about the state of your heart before God. As you walk out your B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. journey this week, remember that the same God who provides the food on your table is the God who authored the Truth in your Bible. Feast on His goodness, nourish your soul with His Word, and watch how He transforms your life from the inside out.
