B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D Living: Rest for the Body, Openness for the Soul
“Rest is not a place we visit occasionally—it is a place we live in when we trust God completely.”
— A.W. Tozer
Each night, when we lay our heads on our pillows, we do more than just rest from a busy day—we surrender. What a beautiful reminder that in caring for our physical bodies with proper rest, we are also invited to spiritual rest through openness to the Holy Spirit.
In this Blog, we will reflect on the first two letters of B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D Living:
Let’s explore some thought-provoking questions, answer them through Scripture, and then close with a prayer and practical steps.
💤 B = Bedtime for Rest
Question: Am I honoring God’s design for rest in my daily schedule?
✨ Genesis 2:2–3 (KJV)
"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
God Himself set the example. Not because He needed rest—but because we do. He blessed and sanctified rest, showing us its value. Honoring a consistent time of rest, especially on His Sabbath, reminds us that we are not machines. We are loved, and made for cycle of rest and renewal.
😴 Psalm 127:2 (KJV)
"It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep."
God does not want us anxiously toiling or worrying day and night. He gives His beloved sleep. Yet how many nights have we tossed and turned with worry? I know I have. But this verse invites us to trust Him—truly trust Him—with everything I can’t control.
🌬️ B = Be Open to the Holy Spirit
Question: What does it mean to be genuinely open to the leading of the Holy Spirit?
📖 John 14:26 (KJV)
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
When I open my heart to the Holy Spirit’s leading, I’m not left to figure life out on my own. He teaches, reminds, and comforts. His presence is personal and powerful—and it means that no question or struggle is too small to bring to Him.
👣 Romans 8:14 (KJV)
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
Being open to His leading is part of our identity. I am not just following rules—I’m following my Father. Being led by the Spirit connects me as a child of God.
🔥 Galatians 5:16–17 (KJV)
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."
To be open to the Spirit, I have to be willing to lay down my fleshly desires, even when they feel right. That means when I go into God’s Word, I mustn’t go with my own agenda, trying to justify my ways. Instead, I go humbly, seeking to be taught, to be changed.
🙏 A Prayer of Commitment
Dear Father In Heaven,
Thank You for the precious gift of rest and for giving me the example of rest from the very beginning. You did not design me to run on empty. You call me to stillness, to surrender, and to trust You with the things that burden me. I want to lay my worries at Your feet. Help me not to carry what You have asked me to release. Please bless my sleep. Quiet my mind, calm my heart, and let my body rest in Your peace.
Send Your Spirit to help me be open to You. Please help me remove anything in my life that blocks me from hearing Your voice. I commit to going into Your Word not to prove a point, but to receive truth. Teach me. Shape me. Remind me of the things I need to know, and help me walk in step with You. I want to be Your daughter who listens, trusts, and obeys.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
🛠️ Action Steps
Here are a few simple but powerful ways to live this out:
For Better Sleep:
Establish a wind-down routine – Create a 30-minute quiet space before bed (no screens, low lights).
Journal your worries – Write down what’s on your heart and give it to God in prayer.
Use calming oils – Consider lavender or your favorite calming oil to help create a restful atmosphere. I definitely have my favorites.
Read a calming Scripture – Let the last thing on your mind be God’s promises (e.g., Psalm 4:8).
Go to bed at the same time each night – Your body thrives on routine.
For Openness to the Holy Spirit:
Pray before reading Scripture – Ask the Holy Spirit to teach and guide.
Fast from your own agenda – Let go of your expectations in Bible study.
Worship often – Make room in your heart for the Spirit by honoring God through praise.
Friend, rest isn’t a reward—it’s a routine God created for you. And as you rest your body, don’t forget to rest your soul by opening it entirely to the One who loves you most.
