Breathe Deeply

Breathe Deep and Let God Work in Your Life

March 09, 20266 min read

Each breath of fresh air reminds me that God is still working—refreshing my body, renewing my mind, and restoring my soul.

Today we are continuing our journey through the acronym B.A.L.A.N.C.E.D. Living, and we’re on Part 4 of the second “A.”

On the physical side, A = Air for Freshness, and on the spiritual side, A = Allow God to Work in Your Life.

Both are deeply connected—because just as we need clean, fresh air to breathe physically, we need to open our hearts and allow God’s Spirit to move freely in our lives spiritually.

Physical A = Air for Freshness

Question:
How can I incorporate outdoor time into my routine for mental and spiritual renewal?

Incorporating outdoor time into one’s schedule can be difficult. It seems like one of those things that can easily be set aside. But if we use every moment intentionally, it is possible.

Psalm 23:1–3 (KJV)

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

I love these verses because they remind me that when the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not lack any good thing. God has given us the gift of fresh air—it’s all around us every time we step out the door. We can’t miss it! The very air we breathe is a reminder of His provision and care.

So, how can we take advantage of it? Think about that for a moment.

Mark 1:35 (KJV)

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”

Jesus knew the value of fresh air and solitude. He rose early in the morning to go outside—to breathe, to listen to the sounds of nature, and to spend quiet time with His Father. It really boils down to a choice: Will we choose what is best for our minds, bodies, and spirits?

We may not be able to go out early every morning all year round, but we can still take advantage of the fresh air. I love how Jesus prayed outdoors. It inspires me to think creatively about how I can do the same.

Maybe it’s opening a window in a quiet space of your home and letting the breeze in as you pray. Or taking a short walk to clear your mind and connect with God.

Even when I can’t go outside to exercise, I use my treadmill near an open window to get some fresh air while I move. Small changes like this make a big difference.

If you work outside the home, you can take a few moments to pause between your car and the building—breathe deeply and thank God for His creation.

Fresh air clears the mind, refreshes the spirit, and strengthens the body. It boosts our immune system and lifts our energy. God designed nature to revive us, but we must choose to embrace it.

Spiritual A = Allow God to Work in Your Life

Question:
How do I remain open when God’s work is uncomfortable?

Wow! What a question. It is hard to stay open when life becomes uncomfortable. Yet it’s in these moments that God often does His deepest work within us.

1 Peter 5:10 (KJV)

“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”

It is really only by God’s grace and by staying connected with Him that we can remain open when life is hard. I know I cannot do this alone—I’ve tried, and it is not bearable. I need God to walk beside me every step of the way.

These promises remind me that even when trials come, God is using them to “settle” the truth deep within me. He’s shaping me for eternity.

Hebrews 12:11 (KJV)

“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

It’s true that while we’re going through difficulties, they don’t feel joyful. But in the end, the fruit of righteousness is produced—and isn’t that what we truly desire as Christians?

I may not like the trials, but I want to be prepared for heaven. That’s what God wants for me too.

So how do we stay open and peaceful through the tough times? By staying connected to Christ, claiming His promises, and—believe it or not—sometimes by simply breathing deeply.

Take a moment to step outside or open a window. Breathe in fresh air, and pray like Jesus did in those early morning hours. Ask Him for strength to endure and for grace to grow.

2 Corinthians 4:17 (KJV)

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

What a promise! Even when life seems overwhelming, God reminds us that the pain is temporary, but the growth is eternal.

When I keep my eyes on Jesus, peace replaces fear. The winds of life may blow hard, but when my roots are grounded in Him, I can breathe and rest in His presence.

Bringing It Together

Both fresh air and allowing God to work are about openness—physically and spiritually.

Just as our lungs expand with every deep breath of fresh air, our souls expand when we allow God’s Spirit to move within us.

So when trials come, let’s make it a habit to step outside, take in a deep breath, and claim His promises. Let the physical act of breathing remind you of spiritual surrender. Breathe in His peace. Exhale your worries.

Prayer of Dedication

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of fresh air and for the work You are doing in my life, even when it’s uncomfortable. Help me to pause throughout my day to breathe deeply, to rest in Your presence, and to let Your Spirit renew my strength.
When life feels heavy, remind me that Your refining work is shaping me for eternity. I surrender to Your process and ask that You fill me with peace, clarity, and courage.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Action Steps

Physical – Air for Freshness:

  1. Step outside at least once a day for a few moments of deep breathing.

  2. Open your windows when possible to let in fresh air while you work or pray.

  3. Take a walk and thank God for the beauty of creation.

  4. Use that outdoor time to quiet your mind and talk to God.

Spiritual – Allow God to Work:

  1. When life feels uncomfortable, pause and pray instead of resisting.

  2. Journal what you believe God may be teaching you in the moment.

  3. Memorize one of the verses above to strengthen your faith.

  4. Take a deep breath and remember—God is working for your good, even now.

Closing Thought

Fresh air revives the body; God’s Spirit revives the soul.
When we breathe deeply—both physically and spiritually—we allow renewal to take place.
So today, choose to step outside, fill your lungs, open your heart, and let God’s fresh wind blow through your life.

Breathe deeply. Trust fully. Let God work freely.
