Blood on the Door Post

Finding Freedom From Sin

April 20, 20268 min read

We are no longer slaves to the taskmaster of sin when we allow the Lamb of God to apply His blood to the doorposts of our hearts.

As I have been reading through the Bible, so many things have come to mind. I have read these different stories many times, yet it amazes me how the Lord can bring new things every single time.

"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

The Word of God is living, and it truly is new every morning. One of the things that I have read recently is the story about the night before the Children of Israel were delivered from their bondage in Egypt. There had been many plagues that had fallen on Pharaoh, and he kept hardening his heart. But then there would be the last plague, which would cause Pharaoh to give in and let them go.

This plague would hit everyone, except those who did what God told them to do. With this plague, an angel was going to go over the land and slay every firstborn child. But there was a way to escape that judgment.

The Sacrifice and the Sign

The instructions God gave to the Children of Israel were very specific:

"And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it... And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt." (Exodus 12:7, 13)

One of the things the people were instructed to do was to kill a lamb and to take the blood from that lamb and put it on the two doorposts and over the door. And when the angel of death came through, and he saw the blood, he would pass over, and the firstborn would live and not die.

Can you imagine how carefully each father followed the instructions? The sons must have watched to be sure their father put the blood there as well. If they trusted God, they would be saved. What a solemn ceremony this must have been.

Coming from the heart of a mother, I imagine that she was making sure that the blood was there as well. She might even have asked if there was enough there. "Is it visible? Put more on! Make sure it can be seen." There must have been some anxiousness; as I imagine it, I can feel the anxiousness of the family.

From Bondage to Liberty

But I can also feel some excitement to think that their bondage was going to be over. They were no longer going to be in bondage to Pharaoh. They had known nothing but slavery, and they were going to be free. What does that even mean? If you have never had freedom, you can’t begin to comprehend what that even looks like.

I don’t know if I could have even slept—and they may not have, because they needed to be ready to move out as soon as the signal was given. If I had been the firstborn, I am not sure I could have slept, or the father and mother. How could you sleep when the angel of death was going to pass over? But then again, if they had full trust in God, they could rest in peace.

Applying the Blood Today

As I reflected on this story, I began to consider how it could apply to us today. At times, we are in bondage just as the Children of Israel. They were slaves to their master, Pharaoh. But for us, we can be slaves to sin and the master of sin, Satan. And we need to be free.

When we allow the sin of this world to take hold of us, it is not peace and happiness. We are slaves, being beaten and accused by the great master Satan. We can even be slaves to our religion, trying to work our way to heaven, and that is just what the devil wants.

The judgment is coming—a death sentence. But if we have the blood over the doorpost, it will pass us by. Jesus came as that Lamb and shed His blood, and that blood is available to put on the doorpost of our lives.

"The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (John 1:29)

Jesus is knocking at our hearts’ door:

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20)

When we open that door, the blood of Christ is on the “doorpost” that He walks through to dwell within us. That blood protects us from many things. And when the judgment comes, we will be safe because Jesus' blood covers us.

We don’t have anything to fear as long as we have Jesus' blood to cover us. We are safe in His hands. But when we try to do things on our own and leave Him out of the picture, we will get distracted.

The total freedom from the things of this world will come when Jesus comes back in glory to take His children home. Satan will no longer be able to continue to tempt us but will be destroyed forever, and we can go home to be with the One who shed His blood for us.

But Jesus still won the victory for us now. It is a matter of us keeping that blood on the doorpost of our hearts so that Satan does not have entrance, and we can have the victory. And the question may come: How can I keep the blood of Christ on the doorpost of my heart?

We need to start by fully surrendering our hearts to Jesus. He is the Lamb that was slain, but He is also the One that applies the “blood” to our “doorpost.” And we need to commit to Him. We also need to rest in Jesus, knowing that He will do the work in our lives as we cooperate with Him.

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6)

Just as the Israelites had to physically apply the blood to their homes to be saved from death, we must spiritually apply the sacrifice of Jesus to our lives to be saved from sin. It is not enough to know the story; we must trust the Lamb. If you feel the "bondage" of this world weighing you down, know that there is a Deliverer ready to set you free.

A Prayer of Commitment

Dear Heavenly Father,

I recognize that I have been in bondage to sin and that I cannot set myself free. I believe that You are the Lamb of God who shed Your blood for me. Right now, I open the door of my heart. I ask You to apply Your precious blood to my life, to forgive my sins, and to protect me from the judgment to come. I surrender my will to Yours. Thank You for the victory and the freedom that only You can give.

In Jesus' Name,

Amen.

5 Action Steps to Apply the Blood of Christ

  1. Fully Surrender Your Will: Surrender is the act of opening the door. Tell God daily that You are His and that You want His will to be done in your life above your own.

  2. Confess and Forsake Sin: The blood is for cleansing. When we slip up, we must go to Him immediately. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

  3. Stay in the Word: To keep the "blood on the doorpost," we must keep our minds stayed on Him. Reading the Bible daily reminds us of our identity as redeemed children of God rather than slaves to the world.

  4. Trust in His Finished Work: Avoid the "slavery of religion" by remembering you can't earn your way to heaven. Rest in the fact that Jesus already paid the price; your job is to stay under His protection.

  5. Live in Expectant Readiness: Just as the Israelites had to be ready to move at a moment’s notice, live your life in a way that shows you are ready for Jesus to return. Let your freedom be a testimony to others.

No matter how dark the night may seem, remember that when God sees the blood of His Son upon your life, you are safe, you are loved, and you are finally free.
